Estee Lauder Pure Color Vivid Shine Lipstick in Violet Electra

Happy New Year you guys! When this post is published I’m probably going to be nursing a hangover, but I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve! Let me know what you did!

I’ve been reading so many end of the year posts and it’s all a bit emotional. My 2014 overall was great, some of my closest friends got married, I travelled to Goa, Jaipur, Japan and China, met up with a lot of friends scattered around the world. I lot of things went on like planning and designing the new house, career related stuff and a lot of great moments with my boyfriend and his family. When I put it all down on paper it seems really great and I’m very grateful and thankful for everything in my life, but I’m more excited for the new year. 2014 felt a bit stagnant to me and there was a lot of personal turmoil. 2015 will be a better year for me, I’m sure of it. :)

I started this blog in 2012 and went through phases of not updating it. 2013 was when I started blogging more regularly and I haven’t stopped since. I’ve had so many new readers this year and I’d like to thank all of you, old and new. This corner of the internet makes me happy and cheerful no matter what goes on in my life. I love reading your comments , banter and suggestions. Hope you all have a great 2015 ahead! ^_^

Okay, so that probably wasn’t what you expected when you read the title of this post. I thought I’d review a very sparkly lipstick for the New Year!

Estee Lauder Pure Color Vivid Shine Lipstick in Violet Electra is one of the lipsticks I bought during my purple phase. It was massively discounted on StrawberryNet and the rest is history. The shade is a purple magenta with fuchsia and silver glitter. It’s just so pretty!!

I’m very conflicted about this lipstick. It think it looks great but doesn’t look great on me. I feel like I can’t really make it work with anything and it looks a bit dated. But I love the colour. Ugh, it’s too difficult!

Formula wise I’m not very impressed either. It’s sheer on first application but buildable in 3-4 layers which is a lot. The shimmer fine and non-gritty. Overall the lipstick feels comfortable and weightless. It also stays glossy and doesn’t settle into lines. I feel it does emphasize problem areas though.

Unfortunately the lasting power isn’t so great, barely 3-4 hours and it just vanishes if you eat/drink. The packaging is nice but with these older Estee Lauder products they look great but still feel cheap compared to other brands in the segment, they’re not weighty. It also has a very strong scent that I’m not too fond of. Of course, the new Sculpting range is very sleek and nice. :)

I thought this was limited edition but I’m wrong, you can still get this at Nordstrom or anywhere else. It costs $26 which is around Rs. 1700. I’m not sure of the actual price in India, might be slightly more.

    Color looks fantastic on you

    • Xuvious

Thank you so much Krithi! Hope you have an amazing year ahead as well. :)
It is a bit pricey, plus the new Sculpting ones are way better. :)

  • fiona furtado

Happy New Year to U too!!! Hope you get more success this year.
And yeah how pretty is the shade. I love how it looks on you.

    • Xuvious

Thanks Fiona! I’m going to try to wear it more often this year because I really do love the colour. :)

I love the shade, pity about the formula. the last 3 years have been super harsh on me so if 2015 doesn’t hold better things I’m in deep do-do.

    • Xuvious

Ahhh, hoping for a great 2015 for you then! :)

  • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Hey girl, happy new year! Glad to hear you were able to travel so much this year. It mus have been exciting!

I really dislike the old Estee Lauder lipsticks. First of all, they smell like fig and I just can’t stand the scent. Second, they tend to be frosty, and I am really not a fan of frosty (so gutted the finish seems to be making a comeback nowadays. Ugh. WHY??). Have you tried their new ones? Those are excellent!

    • Xuvious

If I could get a job where I have to just travel, well, that would be the dream. 😉

I hate the scent as well, it’s definitely a big part of why I feel it’s such a dated lipstick. I don’t like frostiness but glitter and shimmer… yes. :p
I love the Sculpting range, they look amazing too.

  • Jaa

I think it’s a nice color on you but yeah, very disappointing about the formula! I think 3-4 hours is pretty good for a normal lipstick, though? :)

Now, MAC Rebel… that’s something I want to own soon!!

    Happy New Year! 😀

I know lip longevity is relative to how you use it but this is my personal way of doing things. For me, I measure it in terms of if it’ll last from 8-9am when I apply it to lunch time, around 1-2ish. So if it lasts atleast 5-6 hours, I’m good. But I also keep in consideration what the lipstick claims to do. If a sheer lipstick or gloss lasts 3-4 hours I’m not gonna complain but something from a “Pure Color” line is expected to last longer (for me). Hope that makes sense!

This is actually very interesting because different bloggers have different criteria and parameters for what makes a lipstick ‘good’. And it’s also closely related to one’s routine or profession :)

that’s a shame to hear you didn’t love this lipstick that much! i’m not a huge fan of shimmery lipsticks myself but i do tend to love estee lauder products. i’m not sure, but i suppose maybe with their new range being introduced perhaps they’re going to phase out this older line and hopefully you like the new formula better than these.

    • Xuvious

Oh, I’m completely loving the new range, it’s miles better than these. :)

  • Jennifer Monforton

Sorry to hear this wasn’t your favourite, but it’s still a pretty shade nonetheless! Happy New Year :)

    • Xuvious

I just have a thing for shimmery lipsticks. :)

  • nausheen

I too hate shimmery lipsticks, not liking the shade at all.

    • Xuvious

Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but I have a thing for shimmery ones. :)

  • Laarni

So I guess this formula is only good for my quick errands. Anyway, I am glad your 2014 was a blast! Mine was great too! Cheers!!! xo

    • Xuvious

Yes, exactly! Glad you have a great Larni! xx

  • Linda Libra Loca

Too bad yo can’t make it work, I figured it would look great on you. The color is pretty, but I wouldn’t try wearing it with my skintone.

Your 2014 sounds like a preparation year for 2015, so maybe this is why it felt a little stagnant? As always: The best is yet to come!

That’s a lovely thought. Perhaps it was. :)

  • Kiss & Make-up

The color is not my cup of tea nor is the finish. Otherwise I’m a huge fan of Estee Lauder’s Pure Color formula though.

    • Xuvious

I haven’t tried any other from the Pure Color range but I do like the new Sculpting ones. :)

  • Richa Saxena @ CoralswithBlues

That’s indeed a very pretty shade but I’d expect better lasting power considering the Brand :( Beautifully reviewed dear Nd a Happy new year to you :)

    • Xuvious

Yea, I was hoping it would last longer.

  • Divya

I avoid shimmer at all times! Seeing how pretty this looks on you I am rethinking my stance! 😛

    • Xuvious

I know people generally hate shimmer but I’m too much of a child to ignore it. 😉

  • Stefanie Meier

that is a stunning stunning shade, great review x

Wishing you the best in 2015 x

I’m glad you like it! xx

  • Liz

Hmm… I think it’s a really pretty shimmer but brings back that old-fashioned vibe. It might be good layered on top of Rebel!

    • Xuvious

Very true, it does feel dated. I shimmery Mac Rebel, that’s one combo I need to try! x

  • Rashmi

    Love this color!!

  • Erica Choi

Wow, what an absolutely beautiful color! Wish I can pull that off :) Looks stunning on you! xx

    • Xuvious

Thanks Erica, that’s so sweet. xx
