Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac was bit of a rage couple of years ago. I decided to wait on it to get mine. Once the hype died down I realised I still wanted the bag and went ahead with my purchase. I wanted a good stand out crossbody and this colour along with the hardware seemed perfect! What I love is that the gold hardware isn’t too yellow, I feel like that looks very dated. This kind of paler gold looks great with the colour!
This shade at the time of purchase was simply called ‘Purple’ but I’m not aware of any other name. It matches YSL Fuchsia in Rage perfectly! It’s similar to my wallet but a lot more cool toned. I generally wear this when I’m wearing monochrome or black/white/grey, which happens a lot.
The leather is soft pebbled leather which feels amazing but can carry some scratches or scuff marks if they are very deep. In general, it’s not prone to scratching very easily like lambskin. Dimension wise it’s 23cm x 15cm x 5 cm (L x H x D) with a 56cm strap drop. The strap is removable but not adjustable. The bag falls below my hips (I’m 5’3″) and slightly above when worn crossbody. The thick chain really doesn’t dig into the shoulder as that portion is leather with smaller studs. Again, you also have studs on the underside.
I love that you can also use this as a clutch as well. You have the main zip compartment and an external one under the lobster clasp. You also have two internal pockets of roughly the same size. Overall the bag can hold a small wallet, headphones, tissues, sunglasses (with case), phone and a bit of makeup. I tend to keep makeup and my phone in the internal pockets.
The Mini Mac can fit a large continental wallet (usually 20 cm) but it takes up a lot of space and doesn’t leave room for anything else. Hence, I end up carrying a smaller wallet or just my card holder and some cash. I don’t use the outer chain (under the clasp) a lot but I keep tissues and loose change in there, just in case. Overall, it’s not a bag for everyday but one for errands, shopping or just for casual use.
The leather does feel very soft and overtime it has become less rigid and softer. The hardware hasn’t lost any shine and looks good as new, as does the zipper which is very smooth. I will say that the back of the bag can be prone to colour transfer from denim. You can see a little black patch on mine but if you maintain your leather/clean it, it does go away. This would be more pronounced in lighter coloured bags and less so on darker ones. The leather strips had fine sharp edges in the beginning but over the years the edges do look frayed, it’s more noticeable up close though. After two years of use the bag is still in great condition and I don’t see it changing any time soon.
The internal lining is similar to the dust bag, black and white linen. So, you do have to take care to make sure it doesn’t get stained. I wish it was suede or leather, but that would have probably jacked up the price. You get the Mini Mac in a ton of colours which change every season, except a few neutral staples. I really recommend the black or grey one with rose gold hardware if you’re looking for something classic.
If you’re in India, I really recommend Shopbop, Forzieri or Luisaviaroma for shopping Rebecca Minkoff. They all have free shipping and prepaid customs duty. I bought mine in 2013 when it was on sale at Shopbop.com. Mini Mac retails for $195 but I snagged mine at $150. Had to pay customs over it but atleast shipping was free!
