Hello there! I’m here to offer you some relief on this boring Wednesday. Let’s talk about extravagant lipsticks!
This particular lipstick was a definite splurge for me. If you’re going to buy Cle de Peau, might as well buy it in Japan where it is cheaper. For me, the place I was shopping at was tax-exempt and had an additional discount for tourists. You can see where this is going… 😉
Cle de Peau Enriched Lip Luminizer in 203 (Chocolate Truffle) is essentially a sheer moisturising lipstick. Let’s talk about the colour first which is just perfection. It’s at that sweet spot where it’s the right balance of brown and pink which makes it so flattering. It’s definitely tops my list of MLBB shades. It’s very similar to Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle which is one of my all time favourites.
Although it’s sheer it does even out my lips when I build it up. It’s very very moisturising throughout the wear. It’s not as balmy as the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, it definitely has more slip. I find it similar to YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in that regard. Another thing I like is that you can wear this over thick moisturisers and it’ll still look good. It also feels very light on the lips which is always a priority for me. I hate it when you can feel a lipstick (especially now in summer).
There’s no discernible fragrance (yay) and it’s very glossy. It makes your lips look very smooth and even (texture wise). It doesn’t settle into lines either. It lasts about 3-4 hours which I guess is standard for any sheer lipstick. Can’t really survive meals or drinks though. I love wearing this to work, I don’t mind touching up after meals and snacks. If I have to step out for a while or just meet friends etc I love quickly slapping this on. Even if I’m not wearing any makeup at all, I might put this on because that little hint of colour makes me look a lot more put together.
The packaging is different from your conventional lipstick. It’s very tall, almost like a lip gloss. The only other lipstick that comes to mind is the Dior Serum something lipstick which has a similar look.
The holder and actual lipstick (refill) have to be bought separately. Once you insert the refill, it snaps into place. The lipstick can be twisted up but not down. I like that the lipstick retains it’s angled oval shape pretty much always. It’s very easy to apply, especially at the corners and cupid’s bow. The case is weighty and a very dark navy colour, when you look closely you can notice a bit of shimmer throughout as well.
The holder costs $25 and the lipstick itself (refill) is $35. That brings it to a price range similar to Guerlain Rouge G or Tom Ford lipsticks. I can say that it was a definitely cheaper in Japan. I don’t remember exactly what I paid but I had converted it in rupees at the time, it didn’t make my eyes pop too much.
I also get the sentiment of why pay so much for a sheer lipstick. I think the same many times but I rationalise it this way. I’m going to spend a lot for a product, it’s worth it for me if I’m going to use it a lot and enjoy doing so. I’m pretty sure this particular shade makes it “worth it” for me. I think it’s one that I will use till the end. I may not repurchase it right away but at some point, I’ll definitely buy the refill.
